Five Reasons to train BJJ

Why is BJJ so popular... and is it something you should try?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) has become one of the most popular martial arts in the United States. What makes BJJ so popular and is it something you should try? Here are five thoughts on the this sport, and why you should train at Revolution Ashland.

Learn self defense skills

Self defense is a common reason many decide to train BJJ, and with good reason. BJJ was developed so that a smaller person could defend and defeat a larger and stronger opponent. Ideally, you will never find yourself in a situation where you would need to exercise self defense skills. But if you did, the skills taught in BJJ could help you control your attacker and, hopefully, escape a bad situation.

At Revolution Ashland, students learn defensive skills starting as early as the introductory classes. The instructors demonstrate strategies for handling attacks from standing and on the ground. Students are able to practice self defense skills through rolling, or sparring, with training partners in a safe environment.

Stay active • Get healthy • Lose weight

The #1 New Year’s Resolution for many people: lose weight, become more healthy, start exercising. The key to success with this resolution is to find an activity you love, and that you will want to continue beyond the first month of a new year. BJJ is where it’s at! Yes, it’s hard. It will be awkward. But when you succeed in learning a new skill, you will love that feeling of accomplishment. And it will make you want to keep coming back for more.

As you get to know members at Revolution Ashland, you’ll hear their success stories. One person may tell you they couldn’t stick to a gym routine, but love coming to BJJ. Another member, you may hear how training helped them lose weight and quit smoking. It will inspire you in your own journey as you hear the success of those around you.

Connect to a welcoming community and make new friends

It can be intimidating walking into a new gym and starting something new. BJJ brings together a diverse group of people and makes them feel like family. That’s what you’ll experience at Revolution Ashland: a welcoming, friendly environment. As you come to class, as you experience the highs and lows of learning new BJJ skills, you will develop a close-knit connection with your training partners and discover the BJJ family you never knew you needed.

Deal with Stress

Start your day with BJJ. It will make the rest of your day seem easy. Many of us are walking around with a whole lot of stress and things weighing us down. Time on the mat in BJJ seems to somehow lift some of those stresses off, at least temporarily. Maybe it’s the focus required to master a new skill or defend against an armbar or other BJJ technique? At Revolution Ashland, as you progress, you will learn to thrive under pressure. You’ll develop confidence to handle difficult situations. And you will have a place to unload your stress of the day.

Challenge your comfort zone

When we step out of the familiar and into something new, we often discover things about ourselves we may not have thought possible. BJJ is complex. Learning new skills and then being able to implement them against a resisting opponent can be frustrating. At Revolution Ashland, you will find coaches and training partners who will encourage you as you learn and master these new skills.
